Abstract

The fragile geographical situation of Uttarakhand, which offers meager employment opportunities to its people, calls for initiatives that promote suitable livelihood and income-generating activities to help them lead better lives. The National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), a very popular livelihood initiative, is currently underway in Uttarakhand. People have been participating in this mission with various objectives, driven by several factors that motivate their involvement. The NRLM has impacted the participants in multiple ways. The present study was conducted to identify the factors affecting people's participation in the NRLM and to assess the impact of the mission on the livelihoods of its participants. The factors were identified using a binomial logistic regression model, and their impact on livelihood was assessed by constructing a Livelihood Security Index. The study revealed that family size, annual household income, and social backwardness were significant factors influencing participation; moreover, participation in mission activities had a positive impact on the participants' livelihoods.
