Abstract

The present study was designed to analyse the structure and trends of income and employment in Punjab. By analysing secondary data on sector wise Net Domestic Product since 1970-71 sourced from the Statistical Abstract of Punjab and Central Statistical Organization, alongside sector wise employment figures from NSSO/PLFS reports, and utilizing descriptive statistics and compound annual growth rates, the study revealed a notable transition in Punjab as well as in Indian economy from agriculture to other sectors. The study highlighted a relatively higher level of employment diversification and a more balanced sectoral contribution of income and employment in Punjab as compared with the national level. The tertiary sector, with a robust growth rate, outpaced the other two sectors of the economy in terms of their share in the total income and emerged as the catalyst for economic growth both in the state as well as in the country, indicating a shift towards a service-oriented economy. Sector-wise employment elasticity of Punjab and India revealed negative employment elasticity in the primary sector, which necessitates the development of employment opportunities in non-farm sectors.
