This study
assessed the economic performance of rainfed farming systems in Adilabad
district, Telangana, using primary data collected from 160 farmers during the
2024–25 agricultural year through multistage random sampling. Crop–livestock
systems generated higher net returns, greater income diversification, and
better resource recycling than crop-only systems. Cotton and redgram-based
systems performed best with large and small ruminants, while soybean-based
systems performed better with large ruminants. Resource productivity analysis
showed that cultivated area, balanced nutrient use, fodder expenditure, and
farming experience significantly enhanced farm income. High input costs, lack
of marketing and institutional credit were major constraints to profitability.
Diversified crop–livestock systems effectively enhanced income and resilience
in rainfed agriculture. Policy support for enterprise diversification, fodder
development, institutional credit, and extension services is essential for
sustainable rainfed livelihoods
