This
study mapped the kinnow value chains in Punjab and assessed value addition and
the economic performance of identified value chain actors. Value Chain-II
showed the highest marketing efficiency in Punjab (2.95), followed by Value
Chain-V (2.47) and Value Chain-VI (1.15). In contrast, overall marketing
efficiency for kinnow sales in distant markets was 0.49 and 0.37 in Value
Chain-VII and Value Chain-VIII, respectively. The value added was found highest
(152.52 per cent) by roadside retailer cum processor in Value Chain III when
sale destinations were within Punjab, while in the distant market of Bangalore,
PHC added the highest value of 192.68 per cent in Value Chain VIII. Hence, the
government should promote direct marketing models for kinnow marketing to
reduce reliance on intermediaries. In addition, it is imperative to build
enough processing (juice) facilities in the kinnow growing region to give
growers stable and higher prices. Affordable transportation facilities
should be provided to the farmers to take the produce to the distant markets.
The government should regulate transport agencies by capping exorbitant
transporter charges.
