The study used export data of India’s major
processed food and agro-based products for the years 2014-2023 and analysed trends
in growth rate, comparative advantage, intra-industry trade, market
diversification and product diversification. The findings revealed that cane or
beet sugar exports recorded the highest growth, while castor oil revealed the
highest comparative advantage. Grubel Lloyd Index values revealed
intra-industry trade in soybean oil cake and cane or beet sugar, whereas other products
recorded inter-industry trade. Regional Herfindahl Index values indicated
increasing market diversification across all products, except soybean oil cake,
which showed regional concentration. Sectoral Herfindahl Index values showed
product diversification for all selected products. The study suggested
product-specific policy interventions to enhance the export potential and
sustained growth of India’s processed foods in global markets.
