Abstract

The broad objective of the present study was to construct the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) for each district of Tamil Nadu and make a comparative analysis. The study also looked MPI from sector wise (rural and urban) and between social groups. The fourth round of District Level Household and Facility Survey (DLHS-4) used as a data set. The study used Alkire and Foster methodology was used for calculating MPI. The study highlights the severity of poverty in the few districts of the State. Chennai district tops in the index and Ramanathapuram as one of the backward districts; the backwardness in the rural areas was one of the
major reasons for the low ranking of MPI in many districts, and the poverty differs within social groups in the State. The study provides directions to the policymakers to frame different strategies for addressing poverty-related issues in terms of improving the development indicators such as education, health and standard of living. The results of the study can be compared with other indexes
such as the Human Development Index (HDI) for concrete future policy measures.
