Abstract

This paper reviews the theories employed to explain factors behind farmers' adoption of organic agriculture and synthesises a theoretical framework for future research. This study utilises the methodology of systematic literature review. Twenty-one articles published up to 2020 were retrieved from the Scopus, Web of Science (WoS) and Google Scholar databases and reviewed for their theoretical frameworks. The selected articles employed 13 theories to explain the factors behind farmers' adoption of organic farming. Findings suggest that no single theory can sufficiently explain the adoption phenomenon. Thus, a comprehensive theoretical framework is needed for synthesising various constructs. This theoretical framework can further be invoked to build a conceptual framework that may be tested in various country and regional contexts to establish the relative significance of all the factors.
